Switchboard Upgrades Canberra

Outdated switchboards are one of the biggest fire risks in Canberra homes. We replace old fuse boards with modern safety switch systems that protect your family and your property.

Does Your Canberra Home Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

Your switchboard is the hub of your home’s entire electrical system. Every light, powerpoint, and appliance runs through it. If your home still has an old ceramic fuse board, a bakelite switchboard, or a panel without modern safety switches (RCDs), your family may not be properly protected against electrical shock or fire. These older systems were not designed to handle the electrical loads of modern living, and they lack the safety mechanisms required under current Australian Standards.

Clark Electrical & Air Conditioning replaces outdated switchboards with modern units fitted with safety switches on every circuit, circuit breakers rated to your home’s actual load, and clear labelling so you know exactly which switch controls what. Every upgrade is completed to AS/NZS 3000 standards by a licensed electrician (Licence #19957304) and submitted to Access Canberra with the required Certificate of Electrical Safety.

We also take the time to assess your home’s overall electrical capacity during the upgrade. If you are planning to add an air conditioning system, EV charger, or any other high-draw appliance in the future, we can size the board to accommodate it now and save you the cost of a second visit later.

How to Tell If Your Switchboard Is Outdated

If your switchboard has ceramic rewirable fuses instead of circuit breakers, it almost certainly needs replacing. Other red flags include a burning smell near the board, scorch marks on the panel or wiring, frequent tripping under normal use, fuses that blow repeatedly, or a board that buzzes or feels warm to the touch. Any of these signs warrant an inspection by a licensed electrician sooner rather than later.

Even if your board appears to be working fine, homes built before the mid-1990s may not have safety switches installed on all circuits. Since 2004, ACT regulations have required safety switches on all new circuits. If your home predates this, a switchboard upgrade is one of the most cost-effective safety improvements you can make.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed within half a day. Your power will need to be turned off for a portion of the work, but we keep downtime to a minimum and let you know the expected timeframe before we start.

Every home is different, so we provide a free on-site assessment and fixed-price quote before any work begins. The cost depends on the number of circuits, the condition of existing wiring, and whether additional safety switches or surge protection are needed.

Frequently blowing fuses are a strong indication that your switchboard is either overloaded or outdated. A modern switchboard with circuit breakers and safety switches will handle your home’s electrical load safely and eliminate the inconvenience of replacing fuses.

Yes. Under the Electricity Safety Act 1971 (ACT), we are required to submit a Certificate of Electrical Safety (CES) to Access Canberra within fourteen days of completing the work. We handle all of this for you and provide you with a copy of the certificate for your records.

Absolutely. We factor in any planned additions when sizing your new switchboard. If you know you will be adding an EV charger, air conditioning unit, or other high-draw appliance, let us know and we will make sure the board has the capacity to support it.

A circuit breaker protects your wiring and appliances from overloads and short circuits. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electrical shock by detecting current leakage and cutting power in milliseconds. A modern switchboard should have both on every circuit.
